A jury found Bill Cosby guilty of
three counts of aggravated indecent assault on Thursday, for drugging and sexually assaulting
Andrea Constand at his home in a Philadelphia suburb in 2004. And while the country rocks from this stomach-wrenching truth, let us not forget that were it not for God’s grace, we too could become capable of equally devastating sin-induced acts against our fellow man. Bill Cosby spent his public career teaching Americans how to have have a perfect family. But rest assured, Bill Cosby is still teaching us. Yes, Bill Cosby is teaching us what not to do. But Bill Cosby is teaching us just as much that the Biblical admonitions about sin, pride, and lust are absolutely true. Our sins
do find us out. The wages of sin
is death. Pride
does come before destruction. And all of us need to take heed, lest we fall.
Bill Cosby is Still Teaching Us That Sin Has a Price
The Holy Bible speaks a great deal about the price of sin. Your sins will be found out, the Bible says. (
Numbers 32:23) There is nothing hidden from God, the gospel of Luke tells us. (
Luke 8:17) The wages of sin are death, the Apostle Paul admonishes. (
Romans 6:23) From everything I have read in the news, Bill Cosby vehemently denied all the accusations against him. He lied, over and over again. Bill Cosby had others that were close to him lie also. But in the end, the truth came out, because truth always come out. Sometimes it takes way too long. And sometimes truth is painful , but nonetheless, every hidden thing will be revealed. Without repentance and coming under God’s grace, our hidden sins could potentially be broadcast just as readily as Bill Cosby’s was.
Bill Cosby is Still Teaching Us that Pride Comes Before Destruction
Oh the pride involved in Bill Cosby’s years of denial. The arrogance he displayed. The incredible influence and power Bill Cosby wielded. In the beginning, it seemed that no-one could touch him.
I first wrote about the accusations against
Bill Cosby in 2014. back then, he denied everything over and over again. Bill Cosby went on television and denied all wrong doing. He denied everything at the opening of his concerts… and on and on and on the saga goes. But ultimately, just as the Bible says will happen, Bill Cosby’s pride brought his destruction. And our unrepented pride has the potential do the same thing to us.
Bill Cosby is Still Teaching Us That Humility Would Have Been the Better Choice
I wonder what would have happened if Bill Cosby had come clean at the beginning? If he had openly and transparently apologized and sought professional help? We will never know, because he didn’t make that choice. But we can determine today to make that choose humility. That when our accusers come, we will humbly search our hearts before God and ask Him to cleanse us and help us to have the right response. And that we will be quick to forgive and quick to confess our faults. It’s what Jesus would do, and I wish it was what Bill Cosby would have chosen to do.
