For Workers
Where Is God When I Lose My Job?
Yes, where is God when I lose my job? My position at work is being eliminated. The company that I work for has decided to centralize my department to another state. And so at 53 years old, I am being forced to embrace a change that I neither wanted nor saw coming. And to make matters worse, the federal regulations that govern my position were also changed which now makes it near-impossible for me to find another job doing the same thing.
I am too young to retire, and too old to think about a major career shift. But like-it-or-not, that is the situation I am in. I know that God has allowed this for my good, because Romans 8:28 promises that all things work together for the good to those who love God, and are called according to His purpose. And I know that God is not frightened by my career crisis. But I can tell you that I have been?
God knows the end from the beginning – but I do not.
God knows what my professional life will be like a year from now – but I do not.
God knows who my future coworkers will be – but I may not.
Maybe God knowing and my not knowing is the point of this particular season of my life.
Perhaps we can become too self-sufficient, too self-reliant. And without realizing it we think we’ve got the career thing all under control. And so He rocks our world. He causes circumstances to shake the self-reliance and self-sufficiency out of us.So that instead of looking to heaven and saying, “I’ve got this.” We bow our knee and say,“God, I need you. I can’t get through this without you.”
