The Unexpectency of Death

Although we all know that death is a reality that touches all of our lives, it seems to almost always catch us by surprise.

The Unexpectency of Death quite often shakes us to our core and forces us to contemplate the eternal instead of the temporal. The Unexpectency of Death also challenges us to stay current in our relationships because you never know when will be your last good-bye to those you love. The Unexpectency of Death also tends to push us to look at our financial preparedness, either for ourselves should a spouse pass before us or making sure we have enough to leave those we care for.

It is the unfinished business of death that becomes the turmoil that I help people work through during our Grief Recovery sessions. The things that should have been said but never were. The forgivenesses that were never offered, or the regrets that can now never be rectified.

My husband lost two friends this week to death, both men in their 50’s. One had cancer, and although expected, still it seemed to catch everyone by surprise. The other was totally unexpected. He was on vacation and had what is believed to be a heart attack.

The Bible says, “It is appointed unto man once to die, and after that the judgment.

Once.

Then judgment.

There is a day of our death just as there was a day of our birth.

The Bible also says that our life is a vapor, here awhile and then vanishes away.

How short life is.

For today, think about the people in your life. The ones you love and the ones who are less than loved. If at 5 p.m. this evening you received a phone call that one of them had passed, have you said and done everything that needed to be said or done regarding that relationship?

I know I haven’t.

What about you?
